Claims
We have had a claim what do we do?
The procedure to adopt will depend on the type of claim. In all cases you must take action to stop further damage occurring - you can do this straightaway. An example of this may be where your house has been broken into. You should make your house secure again without further delay - this may involve replacement locks, glass, doors etc but it is essential that you do not leave things in a state that would allow more damage to be done with a consequent increase in the amount you need to claim.
In the event of loss or theft you should always advise the police who will make a note of your incident and give you an incident number which you should keep safe. (This also applies to losses overseas when making a claim under a travel policy)
If you have suffered minor damage during a motor accident such as broken lights you may replace them immediately to allow your vehicle to be used legally on theroad. If your vehicle has suffered structural damage do not attempt to drive itagain until it has been seen by a qualified mechanic who will be able to advise you as to the extent of your vehicle's damage.
It is helpful if you can take photographs of any damaged item whether it is your car or household damage - a picture says a thousand words. Why not carry a throwaway camera in the glove compartment of your car or keep one handy in a kitchen drawer.
